SpaceX Delays Tourist Trip Around the Moon

SpaceX Delays Tourist Trip Around the Moon

SpaceX launched a satellite for longtime customer SES SA of Luxembourg early Monday, marking the company's 11th mission of the year. Liftoff occurred at 12:45 a.m. EDT and the satellite was deployed about 32 minutes after liftoff.

The launch of SES-10 in March 2017 was a big milestone for SpaceX, which has been working toward reusable rockets for 15 years before successfully launching a recovered first-stage rocket. According to Space.com, Musk and his company are trying to develop rockets and spacecraft that can be quickly reused in an attempt to lower the cost of space exploration. The launch from Cape Canaveral, Fla., has a four-hour window that opens 12:29am ET (04:29 UTC).

Instead, the satellite will rely on electric propulsion, using pulses of xenon gas to slowly circularize its orbit around the equator over a period of months.

SpaceX won't land the booster again.

"We believe there are one billion people in the Asia-Pacific market who still do not have good connectivity to the devices they hold in their hands", said John-Paul Hemingway, CEO of SES Networks.

SpaceX was able to send the SES-12 communications satellite into a geostationary transfer orbit.

About 27 feet tall and almost 12,000 pounds heavy, Halliwell joked that the spacecraft built by Airbus Defense and Space in France hardly fit into the nose of the Falcon 9 rocket or payload fairing.

SES-12, which is uniquely designed with state-of-the-art wide beams and high throughput beams, will join SES-8 at 95 degrees East to meet the diverse needs of video, fixed data, mobility and government customers across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. After extensive tests and checkout, SES-12 should enter operational service early next year.

The craft, carrying Bangladesh's first communications satellite, the Bangabandhu 1, blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral in Florida.

"If you take all those numbers together, this is really exciting for us", he said.
