DOJ offers new briefing as lawmakers dispute Trump spy claim

In a break with President Donald Trump, House Speaker Paul Ryan said Wednesday that he agrees there is no evidence that the Federal Bureau of Investigation planted a "spy" in Trump's 2016 presidential campaign in an effort to hurt his chances at the polls.

Speaking on Carlson's primetime show Wednesday night, Swalwell denied that the FBI's alleged informant - veteran spy and academic Stefan Halper - actually spied on the Trump campaign, arguing that "spying is what you do against an enemy".

In offering a third briefing, the Justice Department is trying to blunt criticism from the House conservatives who have repeatedly pressed for documents and questioned the department's conduct in the Russian Federation investigation.

But Mr. Ryan became the highest-ranking Republican to throw cold water on that interpretation, which Democrats and former high-level law enforcement officials have claimed was an effort to discredit the ongoing investigation into Mr. Trump and his campaign.

Was the alleged informant in the Trump campaign a spy?

Ryan told reporters he's seen "seen no evidence to the contrary" of Gowdy's assessment that no such spy was planted.

"Normally I don't like to comment on classified briefings", Ryan said.

Ryan said earlier that he agreed with GOP Rep. Trey Gowdy's assessment that there was no evidence to support the commander-in-chief's "SPYGATE" claims.

Compare that with Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Okeechobee, a member of the House Intelligence Committee.

Dobbs then launched into a tirade against Ryan, asking why Republicans don't say, "Mr".

In another tweet he called Mueller's appointment by the Department of Justice in 2017 "totally UNCONSTITUTIONAL".

Trump's lawyers in the Mueller probe have also taken advantage of the back and forth, with Rudy Giuliani telling The Associated Press on Thursday that Trump won't do an interview in Mueller's investigation unless they see the documents themselves.

Ryan said it has been "frustrating" that the Justice Department hasn't provided the documents sooner. "If he did, he'd be impeached so fast", Giuliani said. Nunes has said the committee is still waiting for documents, and Ryan backed him on that Wednesday.

On the pardon issue, Ryan joined Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in sending a subtle message to Trump.

Burr, however, appeared ready to move on, saying the briefing he attended "sufficiently covered everything to do with this right now". I don't know the last time they practiced criminal law.
