Kim Jong-un, Trump set for showdown on CVID, CVIG

The intensifying diplomacy on North Korea has so far left Abe as the odd man out: Trump is preparing to meet Kim, while Chinese President Xi Jinping and South Korea's Moon Jae-in have each already seen the North's leader twice.

"They [searched] my bags and then told me that this is a very sensitive time to be in Singapore and that I should stay away from the Sentosa Island as well as the Shangri-La hotel in town", he said in a Facebook post. It's about the attitude.

"Maybe we'll start with the White House", he told reporters after he was asked whether he would invite the North Korean leader to the White House or Mar-a-lago. "I just don't think it's nice, going in under those circumstances", Trump said.

"They [North Korea] also said they were going to go to nuclear war with us, they were going to defeat us in a nuclear war", Giuliani said at the event. It's a question of whether or not people want it to happen.

Earlier Thursday, Trump said the summit will be "more than a photo-op".

"We could sign an agreement", Trump said. "I'm very thankful to the cooperation that we received from North Korea".

"I would like to pay my deep respect to the outstanding leadership of President Trump, as he made this decision that no past presidents were able to accomplish", Abe said. "You never know in this world", the President told reporters in the Oval Office.

Bolton, considered one of the Trump administration officials least amenable to compromise with the repressive communist regime, has remained largely out of the public eye since insisting in interviews in April that any denuclearization deal with Pyongyang should emulate the "Libya model", in which the rogue regime's nuclear assets were shipped to the United States for verification and destruction. "It would be wonderful if it were". And he says the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula would lead to prosperity and peace for "all Koreans".

During their last meeting at Trump's Florida retreat in April, the US president promised Abe to raise the politically sensitive abductions issue in any talks with Pyongyang.

Before leaving Tokyo, Abe clearly outlined what would need to happen for the summit to be a success: tangible progress on curbing the North's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, as well as answers about the Japanese nationals kidnapped by Pyongyang in the 1970s and 1980s.

There was initially much uncertainty over whether the summit would go ahead at all, and it was briefly called off last month by Trump after a dispute with the North Koreans over the key issue of denuclearisation.

The efforts gives them hope that they can find real success where past efforts have fallen short, he added.

"The United States seeks a bilateral deal with Japan that is based on the principle of fairness and reciprocity", Trump said on Thursday.

Mr Trump said if North Korea did not denuclearise that would "not be acceptable" and he could not take sanctions off until they did.

If Trump walks out of the historic summit without a written agreement, it would be considered a failure and he would face harsh political attacks at home, months ahead of the mid-term elections.

Mr Giuliani said: "That is my interpretation".
