Probe on sound attacks on United States diplomats drew blank: China

The US State Department on Friday issued an expanded health alert for all of China amid reports some US diplomats based in the country had experienced a mysterious malady that resembles a brain injury and has already affected US personnel in Cuba.

The US State Department said Wednesday a medical team had been sent to Guangzhou, in southern China, to conduct screenings of all US government employees and family members who asked for them.

The State Department sent a medical team to Guangzhou, China, recently after a government employee reported experiencing abnormal sound and pressure.

The potential sonic attacks we are now beginning to see are more reminiscent of Cold War era Soviet tactics - but perhaps par for the course of the ever-growing tensions.

'If the US makes formal contact with us, China will continue necessary investigations in an earnest and responsible manner and maintain close communication and cooperation with the US, ' Hua said at a regularly scheduled news conference.

After several months of frustrating non-responses from Cuban officials, then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson pulled almost all of the US embassy staff out of Havana, a step that has soured relations between the Trump administration and the Cuban government.

U.S. officials have said the employee's symptoms were consistent with the ailments that United States diplomats experienced in Cuba past year.

The US State Department said it evacuated two additional Americans who became sick at a diplomatic post in China after hearing odd sounds, media reported.

The latest round of evacuations, which began Wednesday in China, was the first sign that the unexplained ailments have now broadened and threaten to become a full-blown health crisis like the one that affected at least 24 diplomats and their families in Cuba. The Americans in China were living in similar situations-high-rise apartment buildings occupied by other foreign workers and wealthy locals.

Symptoms, sounds and sensations reportedly varied dramatically from person to person.

In April, Canada also ordered families of diplomatic staff in Cuba to return home after mysterious health symptoms were detected in 10 Canadians stationed on the island.

The issue has roiled relations with Cuba, which immediately fell under suspicion, and led the United States to expel Cuban diplomats.

Secretary Mike Pompeo appears to be trying to avoid the uproar caused a year ago after USA lawmakers and the public found out about the medical incidents in Cuba more than six months after they started happening, by some counts.

It serves four southern provinces with a combined population of more than 204 million and processes more than 1 million visa applications of all types annually. They are in addition to a U.S. worker in Guangzhou who was evacuated earlier, as the Trump administration had already disclosed.

It's also the only U.S. diplomatic installation in China authorized to process immigrant visas and handle adoptions.
