Donald Trump demands end to 'unfair' trade after meeting

President Donald Trump delivered a threat to foreign leaders during a press conference Saturday at the 2018 G7 summit in Quebec, Canada: If they don't dramatically reduce tariffs and trade barriers, "we'll stop trading with them".

Trump also tweeted that Trudeau had acted "so meek and mild" during their meetings and that his tough talk later is "dishonest & weak".

The president said the USA was "pretty close" to reaching an agreement on the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico and had discussed two types of sunset provisions in which any of the countries could leave the deal. To United States, frankly, it would be a good thing but I'm not looking to do that.

"They do so much more business with us than we do with them. the numbers are so astronomically against them. we win that war a thousand times out of a thousand".

The President had expressed displeasure at having to the attend the summit, a gathering that began Friday in this town outside Quebec City amid tensions over the Trump administration's imposition of metals tariffs on U.S. allies.

Trump's counterparts in the G7 had sought this week to try to find some semblance of consensus with Washington on trade and the other key issues that have formed the basis of the 42-year-old grouping of industrialized nations.

"We stick to the communique as agreed by all participants", a European official said on condition of anonymity.

Trump's utopian idea was greeted with skepticism, but he appeared to take it seriously, arguing that the United States had been taken for a ride by the rest of the world. "And that ends", Trump said.

He said the U.S. required fair access to markets and an end to unfair trade practices, telling reporters the "United States has been taken advantage of for decades and decades". "Our tariffs are in response to his of 270 per cent on dairy!"

The prospect that he could be moving toward an even greater protectionist trade policy is likely to chill financial markets anxious about tit-for-tit escalation that could lead to a full-blown global trade war.

A photo tweeted by the German government spokesman, @RegSprecher, captured the mood, showing a seated Trump, arms crossed, surrounded by other leaders standing over him.

Mr. Trump planned to leave the summit on Saturday before it discussed climate change and the health of oceans, underlining fractures in the G7 exacerbated by US trade tariffs. And tariffs are going to come way down, because people can not continue to do that.

Earlier while still in Quebec, Trump said he wants to make a deal on NAFTA, and he's open to working with the current pact or striking separate agreements with Canada and Mexico - as long as they agree to renegotiate every five years. "We have put up with Trade Abuse for many decades - and that is long enough".

"We are focused on everything we accomplished here at the #G7 summit", said a statement from the Canadian premier's office released on Twitter.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron were especially vocal ahead of Trump's arrival.

"You go tariff-free, you go barrier-free, you go subsidy free", he said.
