Apple Bans Cryptocurrency Mining on iPhone and iPad

The move may seem a little moot to some as the processing grunt needed to crunch the calculations created to generate or "mine" cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are beyond the power levels of even the iPhone X's A11 Bionic chip.

The new language covers both types of cryptocurrency mining, active and passive, while ensuring Apple users aren't experiencing any performance drain from either.

Cupertino's new dev rules restrict apps that drain the battery, put unnecessary strain on an iPhone's or iPad's resources, and cause the fancy gadgets to generate excessive heat.

Apple has revised its standards for developers regarding cryptocurrency mining, according to a report by AppleInsider The company has updated two separate sections of its App Store Review Guidelines.

Apple has also updated section 3.1.5 (b), which is specific to cryptocurrencies.

Now, the guidelines specify more than that. These conditions extend to apps providing cryptocurrency futures trading, and other crypto-securities or quasi-securities trading.

In addition, apps may not mine directly for cryptocurrencies, unless the mining is performed in the cloud or otherwise off-device.

When consumers choose to share their health record data with trusted apps, the data flows directly from HealthKit to the third-party app and is not sent to Apple's servers. Similarly, apps involved in initial coin offerings, bitcoin futures trading, or other cryptocurrency securities trading need to be from the banks, firms, or other approved financial institutions.

The new Apple Books app launches this fall, with the Book Store available in 51 countries, and free books available in 155 countries. Apple allows apps like Coinbase and Robinhood to enable users to trade Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies, so it's not a complete ban on mobile crypto. Cryptocurrency apps can't offer users virtual coin for tasks like downloading other apps, getting other users to download the app, or boosting social media activity.
