Paul George Expected To Immediately Re-Sign With Thunder

Paul George Expected To Immediately Re-Sign With Thunder

George informed the Thunder on Thursday that he plans to opt out of his contract, and will test the free-agent market.

According to sources, and a clip floating around the Internet, George made the announcement while at a house party at teammate Russell Westbrook's home declaring, "If y'all didn't quite get it, let me say it again, I'm here to stay".

George also considered playing for his hometown Los Angeles Lakers.

George was traded to the Thunder nearly a year ago after telling the Indiana Pacers he would not re-sign with them. Since the Thunder received George's Bird Rights via the Indiana Pacers trade, they were able to offer him more money than any other team along with an extra year. The trade looked lopsided in favor of the Thunder at the time, but Oladipo's ascendence to All-Star status combined with OKC's up-and-down season evened the scales a bit.

In a vacuum, this is an expensive deal for a Thunder squad that took a chance by acquiring George in a contract year. The hope in Oklahoma City is that this year, they'll mesh together and become a significant threat in the National Basketball Association.

Unless another team surpasses the Thunder this season (which is possible, given where the league's finances are going) that would easily make Oklahoma City the most expensive team in National Basketball Association history. Doing so and filling Singler's roster spot with a player signed for the veteran's minimum would shave almost $15 million off the Oklahoma City tax bill and save the team about $17 million overall.

Looming over all of these decisions is a crucial question: Just how good does Oklahoma City project to be in 2018-19 after re-signing George?

Grant, 24, averaged 8.4 points and 3.9 rebounds in 20.3 minutes per game for the Thunder last season, his first full year in Oklahoma City.
