South Korean KO - Dark day for defending champions

South Korean KO - Dark day for defending champions

Germany can guarantee progress with a win by two clear goals on Wednesday but all four teams can still qualify from Group F, even South Korea, who now have no points.

Even though the score in Ekaterinburg ended South Korea's hopes of going through, they still sensed a memorable win over Germany.

South Korea added one more as time expired, Son tapping in after Manuel Neuer had gone up the pitch as Germany searched for a goal.

Despite not qualifying for the last 16 themselves, South Korea's 2-0 win sent Germany back home and Mexico to the knockout stage.

Pushing for goal in the late minutes, Die Mannschaft conceded two injury time goals to be knocked out in the group stages.

Germany have been eliminated in the first round of the World Cup for the first time in 80 years, since a defeat in 1938 at the hands of Switzerland, where they drew the first match 1-1, before being beaten 4-2 in the replay.

Germany coach Joachim Loew caused a surprise by leaving midfield attacking stalwart Thomas Mueller on the bench for the first time since 2012 after his underwhelming displays against Mexico and Sweden.

Mexico survived a nail-biting scare to advance to the World Cup's round of 16 as defender champion Germany was stunningly dumped out of the tournament on Wednesday. "I told (my players) we would have opportunities, that they would need the victory more than us".

Germany suffered the first of several scares after South Korea won a free kick on the quarter hour when Sami Khedira's boot connected with the head of Jung Wooyoung.

Germany are out of the 2018 World Cup.

The World Cup is held every four years.

Mats Hummels headed over the top when unmarked six yards out in the closing stages, before South Korea's two late goals.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but the decision was overturned following a video review.

Defeat to South Korea on Wednesday sealed Germany's fate after a previous loss to Mexico earlier in the competition.

"We beat the world champions and normally it's a dream and we can be proud of the team", Son said.

Ozil has been heavily criticised throughout the tournament and was dropped for the 2-1 win over Sweden last week.

Toni Kroos tried to spark his side but was denied by Cho Hyun-woo in the 88th minute, one of a number of fine saves by the South Korean keeper.
