Uruguay sends CR7's Portugal home by 2-1

Uruguay sends CR7's Portugal home by 2-1

Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez expressed his concern over Edinson Cavani's condition after the forward set up a World Cup quarter-final date with France.

Confederations champions left at the World Cup. This is the third time that this record has changed hands in Russian Federation, with Ronaldo and Ricardo Quaresma having both broken it during the group stage.

"We have a fantastic group, young and with a lot of ambition and for that reason I think the team will remain strong".

Three points from Uruguay's 2-1 win over Portugal in the round of 16 at the World Cup.

Angel Di Maria, Gabriel Mercardo and Sergio Aguero scored but it was not enough as Lionel Messi and his teammate crashed out of the tournament. "There is a tournament in September, the Uefa League of Nations, and we hope that he is with us so that he can help the young players who will need their captain's example".

Portugal stepped up the tempo after the restart and were rewarded when Uruguay were caught napping by a short corner.

They had 61 percent possession, played more than double the number of passes as Uruguay and had 20 attempts compared to six from their opponents.

'We leave with our heads held high.

"You can not say that he and Portugal have shown great combinations or tiki-taka football to score great goals".

"The distinctive feature of the game was the dedication the players showed on the pitch, and that is the way that we see football", Tabarez said.

The World Cup lost its headline acts on Saturday as the game's two biggest stars, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, readied to leave Russian Federation after their teams were eliminated in the round of 16.

"Cavani has to thank Suarez today, but his movement has always been brilliant, finishing not always great but, for the first, he improvises brilliantly", said Keown.

Uruguay will now prepare to face France on Friday with Cavani in a race to be fit. "I hope it's going to be a great clash", he said. However, the veteran centre-back's joy was short-lived, as Cavani restored the South Americans' lead with a stunning side-footed finish not long afterwards.

"In football, there are no moral victories and I would have preferred to play worse and win the match", Portugal coach Fernando Santos said.

Uruguay had eight blocked shot attempts after having just five in the first three games combined.

Speaking after the defeat to Uruguay, he was asked if Ronaldo had more to give to the Portugal team.

The Real Madrid forward had failed to find the net in his four previous knockout games and never really troubled Fernando Muslera in the Uruguay goal.
