Wimbledon 2018: Third seed Cilic beaten by Pella in second round

Wimbledon 2018: Third seed Cilic beaten by Pella in second round

"It was very tough because he played very well", said 11-time French Open champion Nadal, who is chasing an 18th major.

But third-seeded Cilic unexpectedly fell.

Russia's Ekaterina Makarova defied second round victim Wozniacki's churlish prediction that she wouldn't progress further in the tournament by reaching the last 16.

The Israeli tennis star Dudi Sela was beaten Tuesday by world number one Rafael Nadal in the first round of the Wimbledon Grand Slam tournament, in his third loss to the Spaniard in three career matches.

Ekaterina Makarova of Russian Federation also reached the fourth round, following up her victory over second-seeded Caroline Wozniacki with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over former semifinalist Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic.

The 33-year-old Sela, who in 2009 achieved his career high ranking, 29, could only survive halfway into each set before losing his serve and eventually being knocked out of the tournament.

This is his 10th appearance at Wimbledon; he has reached the third round three times previously and lost.

Del Potro faces Benoit Paire in the third round after the Frenchman upset 26th-seeded Canadian Denis Shapovalov.

Djokovic overcame an apparent thigh problem to beat Horacio Zeballos 6-1 6-2 6-3, while top-ranked Nadal defeated Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 6-4 6-3 6-4.

Just like in the opening two matches, Roger was the dominant figure on the court, never facing a break point and keeping the pressure on Jan-Lennard with 14 break points he created, converting four to stay in front from start to finish.

"Yesterday he was playing so, so well and I couldn't do anything. It's the most special court for me, hundreds of thousands must have come to see me play here". Happy for the victory and happy with way I played. "I felt my mind go and move on".

Federer, the only semi-finalist from previous year left in either of the singles draws, will face France's Adrian Mannarino on Monday.

The seven-time champion came from a break down in the first set to get past Kristina Mladenovic 7-5, 7-6 (2).

Makarova, who has reached the round of 16 at the All England Club for the third time, will next face Italy's Camila Giorgi, who advanced after saving a match point while beating Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2.
