They were also unable to keep with up the pace of Croatia's play as the Croats began to find gaps in their defensive set-up and created more chances to win.

Harry Kane looks set to claim the Golden Boot as the World Cup´s leading scorer, but the Tottenham star rarely looked like adding to his six goals against Croatia.

But it was Croatia who struck the killer blow when Perisic won a header on the edge of the box, England lost concentration and the ball dropped for Mandzukic, whose firm low finish beat Jordan Pickford.

Southgate claimed England "broke through barriers" during their World Cup campaign in Russian Federation. "We knew what they were doing and where", he said.
