Trump arrives in United Kingdom to pomp and protest

British Prime Minister Theresa May invoked wartime leader Winston Churchill and strong transatlantic ties as she welcomed Donald Trump on Thursday - hours after he began a protest-laden visit by questioning her Brexit strategy in a press conference and newspaper interview.

The two leaders are also expected to discuss Russia, Brexit and Middle East.

"I guess when they put out blimps to make me feel unwelcome, no reason for me to go to London", he said.

Matthew Butcher, an anti-Trump campaigner and one of the "babysitters" of the balloon, said: "I think that the thing that the Trump balloon does is that it brings an element of fun to the protests, but it also gets under Donald Trump's very thin skin".

He said: "I am going to a pretty hot spot right now with a lot of resignations".

Mr Trump and his wife Melania landed at Stansted on Air Force One at 1.50pm local time before a helicopter took them to the United States ambassador's residence in London.

After taking a firm stance both days of the conference, which included calling Germany a "captive" of Russian energy, Trump did say USA commitment to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation remains strong and he thanked other members for "additional money they are putting up". "The people voted to break it up so I imagine that is what they would do, but maybe they're taking a different route". "They all made commitments, and they will be up to 2 percent over a relatively short period".

"Our trade and investment relationship is unrivaled - we are the largest investors in each other's economies and every day a million British people go to work for US companies in the United Kingdom and a million Americans go to work for United Kingdom companies in the US", May said.

He was met at Stansted Airport by dignitaries including International Trade Secretary Liam Fox and the United States ambassador Woody Johnson. They added that as a whole, polled Britons have a negative view of Trump, but regarding his visit to their country, it can "broadly be described as negative but pragmatic".

The poll conducted this week said 63 percent found Trump racist, and 74 percent said he was sexist.

At the same time, Trump will be touring a defense site with May outside of London.

"The spirit of friendship and co-operation between our countries, our leaders and our people, that most special of relationships, has a long and proud history".

Donald Trump, 72, is about to visit the United Kingdom for the first time since being elected president in November 2016, and the British people aren't prepared to give him a warm welcome.

Trump's trip coincides with a tumultuous week for May after two senior ministers resigned in protest at her plans for trade with the European Union after Britain leaves next March.

"There is no stronger alliance than that of our special relationship with the US and there will be no alliance more important in the years ahead", May said in a statement.

But Brexit champion Nigel Farage, a critic of May's Brexit plans - formally unveiled in a policy paper Thursday -predicted there would be "confrontation" on the visit.

"I think he has done a bad job on crime, if you look, all of the awful things going on there, with all of the crime that is being brought in".

Trump and May are expected discuss Russian Federation ahead of the president's meeting with President Vladimir Putin on Monday.
