United States officer quits after harassment over Puerto Rico shirt

The Cook County Forest Preserve District police officer, Patrick Conner, resigned Wednesday, and the investigation into the incident continues, the agency said.

"We are further addressing aspects of this incident and more information will be shared here and with the media tomorrow (July 12)".

On Monday, Forest Preserves of Cook County, which administers the park, tweeted that it was aware of the incident and video, and that it had launched an investigation.

Still the 36-minute video of the confrontation posted by Mia Irizarry, the woman targeted in the vide left many people upset. "Are you a citizen?"

Puerto Rico is a USA territory and its residents are US citizens, yet Trybus, who is white, told Irizarry that "if you're an American citizen, you should not be wearing that".

That's a central fear among white nationalists, the alt-right, racists or whatever you want to call them: Immigrants are coming to America and fundamentally changing the country, moving it away from what they believe are its white, European roots.

The video also shows Irizarry ask a nearby officer, Connor, for help, but he does not appear to intervene.

Timothy Trybus, 62, is charged with two felony counts of hate crime, Cook County State's Attorney spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said.

Irizarry called to Connor, "Officer can you ..."

The officer can then be seen talking to the man who gesticulates back and tells him to "shut the f*** up".

In a statement Thursday, Forest Preserve Supt.

Connor was put on desk duty immediately after the incident, but nothing more was done for nearly a month. The woman, Mia Irizarry, is heard appealing to the officer to help restrain the man, but the officer doesn't appear to engage until almost 10 minutes later, when other officers arrive.

"Officer, I'm renting this area and he's harassing me about the shirt I'm wearing, ' Irizzary then tells the cop, who had already been called to the scene to investigate Trybus" intoxicated behavior. "The world is not going to change the United States of America, period", he continued.

"We don't know what was happening outside the video; we don't know what was going on inside his (Conner's) head at the time", the attorney, Tamara Cummings, said Thursday.

Puerto Rico has been a USA territory since 1899.

And sadly, the same fear and "otherness" is extended to other people, the handicapped, gay and lesbian and transgender Americans, immigrants, Muslims, people of color the list just goes on.

I showed my official ID as a Member of Congress, to which the officer said, "I don't think so", indicating that she thought my ID was a fake and that I couldn't possibly be a Member of Congress.

Garcia posted a statement in which he said, "The Puerto Rican community deserves an apology and the young woman deserves justice from the Cook County Forest Preserve and the Cook County Justice System". Spencer, speaking about America, told the Los Angeles Times in 2016: "We live in a multi-cultural country where now, European Americans are being dispossessed".
