Russian President Vladimir Putin Re-Invites Trump To Russia

Vladimir Putin said on Friday that he has invited Donald Trump to Moscow, countering an offer to visit the United States as a possible sequel to last week's controversial summit in Helsinki.

Putin spoke in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he attended a summit meeting of major developing economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Wednesday said the White House had made clear that other CNN journalists were welcome at the Rose Garden event, just not Collins.

Putin did not say how Trump had reacted to the invitation to travel to Moscow.

Given Trump's antagonistic comments toward traditional allies like Canada and Germany - in addition to his statement that the European Union is a "foe", only to greet Putin warmly days later - it is unsurprising that the leaders of many American allies are now reassessing how they engage the United States.

Pence also reacted to news that a CNN reporter had been barred from a White House press event on Wednesday, following questions she asked President Trump earlier in the day while she was representing the press pool.

During the BRICS economic summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, Putin said he and Trump had discussed at their meeting last week in Helsinki topics that "concern very many countries around the world and, including, all of Europe", and buttered up his United States counterpart with flattery.

Trump is hardly in a strong position because "the Helsinki summit was such a fiasco", said James Goldgeier of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Putin and Trump met in Helsinki earlier this month. "Be my guest. He has such an invitation, I told him that". The question is central to the federal investigation - Trump calls it a "witch hunt" - into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

"They said that the questions I asked were inappropriate for that venue", Collins told CNN.

"He has a desire to conduct meetings in the future and I am ready", Mr Putin said, stressing, however, that conditions should be in place for such events to go ahead.

It is part of "a power game between Putin and Trump", said Dr Alina Polyakova, of the Brookings Institution.

That docile performance in Helsinki required Trump to turn his back on American intelligence officials who have briefed him on the overwhelming evidence of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

The White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) condemned the act in a statement and said that "this type of retaliation is wholly inappropriate, wrong-headed, and weak", adding, "In our republic, the WHCA supports the prerogative of all reporters to do their jobs without fear of reprisal from the government". 'They discussed some new ideas, and they will keep working on them, ' the official said.

Putin "will not be welcome" at the Capitol, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters.
