Israeli Airstrike Kills Armed Islamic State Operatives On Border With Syria

Russia's military police will now patrol the Israeli-Syrian border.

The UN peacekeeping forces first deployed along the frontier in 1974 to separate Syrian and Israeli forces after Israel occupied the Golan Heights in the 1967 war.

The incident took place on the southern Golan Heights, near the triangle of Syria, Jordan and Israel borders.

Rudskoy said Russian military police have accompanied the peacekeepers on patrols, adding that eight Russian-manned observation points opposite the United Nations points will be set up "to rule out possible provocations". "Once the situation has been stabilized, these posts will be handed over to personnel from the Syrian government forces".

The Syrian conflict erupted in 2011 and Russian intervention in 2015 helped to turn the tide in President Bashar al-Assad's favour.

Lieberman reiterated Israel's demand that Iran not set up military bases against it in Syria, nor that Syria be used to smuggle arms to Hezbollah guerrillas in neighbouring Lebanon.

That message was conveyed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Russian President Vladimir Putin when they met in Moscow last month, a senior Israeli official said.

Two days later another Russian diplomat contradicted Viktorov and claimed Iranian forces had pulled out to 85 kilometer from the Israeli border. He said a preliminary assessment was that the infiltrators were Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants.

The terrorists had crossed into Israeli territory but had not yet breached the security fence, Conricus said, indicating the terrorists may have been on the way to attack Israel.

Israeli troops were on "high alert and readiness" following the strike.

The strike on the Islamic State terrorists comes amid a large-scale drill being held by the IDF's Northern Commander to test its military preparedness.

Assad told his troops on Wednesday they were close to victory after inflicting a succession of defeats on fighters.

A series of blistering offensives backed by Moscow and Tehran has forced the rebels out of many of their strongholds, putting Assad's government back in control of almost two-thirds of the country.

Since Israel started its operation "Good Neighbor" in 2013 the IDF delivered tons of food, medicines and other humanitarian aid goods in Syria and has provided medical treatment to thousands of Syrians including 600 children who came to Israeli hospital accompanied by their mothers.
