Kohli masterclass an ‘eye-opener’ for Curran

India captain Virat Kohli made Dawid Malan pay for dropping him twice with a maiden Test century in England as the tourists bounced back in the series opener at Edgbaston on Thursday (Aug 2).

English cricket team reached a milestone on 1 August becoming the first team to play their 1,000th Test match in the 142-year history of Test cricket.

As for his own performance, Curran added: 'Personally, it was a pretty special day for me with the ball.

"Credit to a great innings there", said Curran.

"I can't see it becoming an issue throughout this game or moving forward, but it makes entertaining cricket for everyone to watch - which is exactly what you want in Test cricket".

The day began with England managing to add just two runs to their overnight total of 285 runs in their first innings.

Only Cook fell in the first session, his front-foot defence defeated by a flawless off-break from Ashwin - repaying his introduction in only the seventh over, despite being India's sole spinner here, with telling drift from round the wicket before the ball turned and dislodged the off-bail.

"He showed terrific discipline I felt".

But a late cut four off all-rounder Ben Stokes, his 14th boundary in 172 balls, saw Kohli to a 22nd Test hundred in what is the first of a five-match series.

Kohli moved onto his highest score in England, 53, but was riding his luck after being dropped at first slip and edging three times short of fielders behind the wicket.

But Kohli took the session by the scruff of the neck, registering his superb century two overs later and then dominating a last-wicket stand of 53 with Umesh Yadav scoring only one run.

Cook's departure brought in skipper Joe Root, who together with Jennings started the fix work and forged a 57-run second wicket stand and ensured there were no more hiccups in the opening session.

Vijay was the first to fall for 20 as Curran swung the ball back into his pad and won a leg before review.

Anderson was rewarded for his efforts with 2-41 while Adil Rashid, brought on to bowl at the tail, trapped Ishant Sharma lbw before dismissing Kohli to finish for 2-31. KL Rahul (4) and Shikhar Dhawan were also dismissed in a matter of few balls by Curran as the match suddenly changed directions with India being 59 for 3. In-between Malan's errors, Cook also shelled a chance at first slip.
