Stewart added Trump was wrong when he sided more with Putin than the USA intelligence community about Russian interference in elections, and wishes his corrections were more forceful.

Bolton said that in an expanded meeting with top advisers in Finland after the two leaders met privately, Putin said that election meddling was "the first issue" that Trump raised with him. "This includes measures to heighten the security and resilience of election systems and processes, to confront Russian and other foreign malign influence in the United States, to confront such aggression through worldwide action, and to reinforce a strong sanctions regime".

During Thursday's White House press briefing, National Intelligence Director Dan Coats said his agency is meeting weekly with other agencies ahead of November's midterms.

The US government on Thursday accused Russian Federation of carrying out a "pervasive" campaign to influence public opinion and elections, in a warning just months before crucial legislative polls.

Coats also said the Russian interference, thus far, in 2018 is not up to the level of their work in the presidential contest, where they are accused of aiding Trump win the White House by running an influence campaign in his favor, mainly through social media channels.

"This is a threat that we need to take extremely seriously".

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats told reporters that: "The intelligence community continues to be concerned, both about the midterms and the 2020 presidential election".

But the message from the White House on Thursday could not have been clearer.

Coats appeared with National Security Adviser John Bolton, FBI Director John Wray, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and National Security Agency Director Paul Nakasone. Who is the president who said to the United States, we are going to increase our spending on defense...?

"The president is not obstructing, he's fighting back", press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters.

Trump has voiced skepticism about Russia's role in US election meddling, drawing accusations from Democrats and Republicans alike that he is ignoring a threat to American democracy.

However, the statement comes just weeks after Trump caused outrage by suggesting, following a meeting with Putin, that Russian Federation wouldn't have "any reason" to hack USA elections.

Both Mr Coats and Trump's national security advisor John Bolton controversially claimed the Trump administration is taking decisive action to combat Russian interference. "We're sharing with them actionable intelligence in a way that wasn't happening before".

The protests began on July 16 after Trump made controversial comments he later clarified that appeared to support Russia's explanation for election meddling over the conclusion of USA intelligence agencies. Based on the fact that no President has been tougher on Russian Federation than me, they will be pushing very hard for the Democrats.

Gingrich, a Fox News contributor, added that he believes Manafort has a "good chance" to prevail at trial and Mueller will "look like a fool" if that happens.
