Four people, including two police officers, were killed Friday in a gun attack in the eastern Canadian city of Fredericton.

Fredericton police say they will not be releasing the names of the shooting victims at this time.

Police later confirmed there was no further threat to the public.

The suspect was being treated for "serious injuries" related to the shooting incident, police said.

He said local police would be leading the investigation, suggesting there was no concern for national security. It's unclear at this time if there are more suspects.

Everett Chalmers Regional, "is now treating multiple victims of today's shooting", the local health authority said shortly before noon.

Louise Kennedy, 75, who lives with her dog at 237 Brookside Drive, said the shooting began in the building next door at about 7 a.m. AT.

Constable Costello - "Robb with two Bs", he would introduce himself as - was a 20-year police veteran, having served in various divisions with the Fredericton Police Force.

"Not enough can be said about the courageous efforts shown today and everyday by members of the Fredericton Police Force, the first responders involved, and all those who respond to the call for help".

In 2014, three federal police officers were killed and two more were injured after responding to an emergency call about an armed man roaming a residential neighborhood of nearby Moncton, New Brunswick.

On Thursday, Ontario pledged more money for police and to keep suspects behind bars while they await trial on gun crime charges. "In this time of shock and grief, let us all protect their families", O'Brien said in a tweet Friday morning.

"I offer my condolences, thoughts and prayers to the victims and their families".

"We'll grieve, we'll get through this disgusting tragedy", said Secord.

The Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, sent his condolences.

"Awful news coming out of Fredericton".

Costello and Const. Sara Burns were the first officers to arrive at the scene of the early morning shooting.

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale told reporters in Sarnia, Ont., that the Fredericton shooting is a huge tragedy.

"The Fredericton police force, the RCMP and authorities are doing everything they can to ensure they undertake the investigation as rapidly as possible, and they're doing everything they can to notify the family of the victims", he said in an interview.

Gallant urged residents, particularly those living in the areas identified by police, to keep informed about the situation as it developed and to follow the instructions of law enforcement officials.

The circumstances of the shooting in the capital of New Brunswick province were not immediately known. They were identified as Lawrence Robert Costello, 45, and Sara Mae Helen Burns, 43. But a proliferation of weapons has led to an increase in gun crimes in recent years.
