Gretchen Whitmer Handily Wins Michigan's Democratic Gubernatorial Primary

Gretchen Whitmer, left, won Michigan's Democratic nomination for the state's gubernatorial primary on Tuesday night.

Whitmer solidly defeated businessman Shri Thanedar and progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed, who had the backing of national progressives like Sen.

State Attorney General Bill Schuette won the GOP nomination.

Whitmer is from MI and now lives in East Lansing with her family. Party activists will choose attorney general and secretary of state nominees at a convention in late August, and Schuette said Wednesday his running mate will be a woman.

"Why don't we talk about the cost of reduced productivity because of people who need to go on disability, because of people who are not able to participate in our economy because they are having issues like diabetes or they don't have access to the health care that they need?" she added. Slotkin, who has raised more money than Rep. Mike Bishop, said that particularly this year, voters are looking for candidates "who will no longer just kind of check the box on voting the right way" but are asking how they will defend their rights.

Steve Lauer, 75, a retired business consultant from Traverse City, said he backed Schuette because of his experience and conservative beliefs.

Schuette was the only candidate to get President Donald Trump's endorsement.

"I like balanced budgets".

In the 8th District stretching from the northern Detroit suburbs to Lansing, former USA national security official Elissa Slotkin, a Detroit, moved on to face Republican Rep. Mike Bishop in what is expected to be a competitive general election.

After Tuesday's primaries across four states - Kansas, Michigan, Missouri and Washington - there were 11 female nominees for governor and 182 for the House of Representatives, the USA media reported. Calley, who was supported by Snyder but withdrew his support for Trump in 2016, touted economic gains under their watch and accused Schuette of illegally misusing his office to advance his political career and wrongly prosecuting top state officials for Flint's water crisis.
