West Nile cases see steep increase in ND

Health officials say 80 percent of people who contract West Nile will not get sick.

The two cases are in Musselshell County and Lake County, according to a press release from the agency.

EEE is a mosquito-borne virus that causes swelling of the brain.

Infections may result in fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, a rash, muscle weakness or swollen lymph nodes.

Dress - Wear loose-fitting, long sleeved shirts and trousers to reduce the amount of exposed skin.

Drain or dump standing water weekly. In addition to human cases, one horse, 10 birds and 34 mosquito pools have also tested positive for WNV.

"Any time you are sick, consult with a health care provider, especially during the time of the year we might see more mosquito activity", she said. In Ohio, West Nile virus was first identified in birds and mosquitoes in 2001.

The disease, which has infected more than 150 people in the past six years, is on track to pose an unusually higher-than-normal risk this year and is widespread throughout the commonwealth, having already been found in 51 Pennsylvania counties as of August 1, including Dauphin. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds.

West Nile is spread through mosquitoes that have fed on infected birds. The virus is life-threatening for the elderly. Other strategies to avoid West Nile Virus are wearing light colored, long and loose clothing, draining all standing water, and limiting outdoor exposure during dusk and dawn.

Since 2000, there have been 134 human cases of West Nile virus-associated illnesses and three deaths in the state.

Two earlier samples were found in Northfield earlier in July.

No human cases of West Nile virus have been reported this year in Dauphin County.

Ganesh Shivaramaiyer, DCHHS interim director, said: "Dallas not only conducts active surveillance to detect WNV and monitor infection rates locally but also educates the community to take preventative action". An effective repellent will contain DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
