Liberal leadership crisis: Peter Dutton attempts second strike on Malcolm Turnbull's leadership

Former Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton needs 43 signatures for Turnbull to call a party room meeting and there are reports that number has quickly climbed over the past 24 hours.

"My decision to move to the crossbench is not about Dutton or Turnbull, it is a matter of principle".

Nationals MP Kevin Hogan vowed to leave the Coalition to sit on the crossbench in Parliament, while supporting the government on confidence motions and supply, because of the disarray.

Mr Dutton challenged Mr Turnbull on Tuesday in a vote by the Liberal Party, the senior partner in the centre-right government coalition, that likely marked the beginning of the end for Mr Turnbull.

"I do not condone what the Labor and Liberal Party is doing with the office of Prime Minister and I understand people's cynicism because of this revolving door issue", he said.

Cosgrove is British Queen Elizabeth's representative in Australia and would need to be on hand to swear in a new prime minister if Turnbull was ousted, or to accept Turnbull's request to dissolve parliament if he decides to call an early election.

Experts predict Julie Bishop will retain her position as deputy party leader, making it her third time in the role to three separate leaders.

This sparked a series of tweets, now shared and liked thousands of times, and made him a topic of discussion in Australian politics - with many Twitter users imploring him to come over and take over the prime minister's office himself. But the present debacle contains so many wheels within wheels that it is virtually impossible to imagine anyone being able to keep all of them in view at once.

Australia's continued political instability has fuelled anger and frustration among voters and hindered investment by the business sector.

The turmoil has upset Australia's financial markets, with the main stock market down almost 0.5 percent on Wednesday to a nine-day low.

The Prime Minister has refused to lay down over the challenge to his leadership. "Anytime we see uncertainty like is happening in Canberra, it is not helpful", said Qantas chief executive officer Alan Joyce.

Turnbull said he had done "everything I can" to keep the Liberal Party united but had faced an "internal insurrection" that had driven the government down in the opinion polls.

So before we get into the complexities of sorting out exactly what a change in Prime Minister could mean for Australia, let's bring it back to basics and figure out the who's-who in the Australian Survivor Parliament right now.

"I can't ignore reality", Mr Cormann said as he announced he was withdrawing support for Mr Turnbull, adding that five other ministers who voted for Mr Turnbull on Tuesday had told him they were changing sides.

Australian newspapers echoed the frustration many voters feel over the constant leadership changes.

Opposition MPs claimed that Dutton's family's ownership of two child-care centers that received public funding breached a constitutional ban on lawmakers having a pecuniary interest in an agreement with the public service.

Former Australian Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton speaks to the media during a news conference at Parliament House in Canberra, Australia, August 21, 2018.

But in a major blow, his influential Finance Minister Mathias Cormann, along with the employment and education ministers, said they no longer supported him.

Mr Turnbull called them out yesterday as he outlined his plan to face the party room today.
