John McCain Honored at US Capitol Memorial Service

Senator John McCain paid a last visit to the Capitol on Friday before services Saturday at the Washington National Cathedral.

The motorcade was expected to pause at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial where McCain's wife, Cindy, will lay a ceremonial wreath to honor those whose lives were lost during the Vietnam War.

McCain's family made clear Trump was not welcome at memorial services in Arizona and Washington or at Sunday's private burial service at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Biden noted that McCain died of the same kind of cancer that killed his son Joseph "Beau" Biden III and the two politicians' mutual friend Sen.

McCain's service in Vietnam, and his refusal to be released early as a prisoner of war, made the setting of Friday's service all the more fitting, some said.

McCain sought the Republican nomination for president in 2000 and won the nomination in 2008.

House Speaker Paul Ryan said he was sometimes on the receiving end of McCain's "distinct brand of candor" and said the late senator relished a good fight.

A cortege carried his body to the Arizona Capitol rotunda on Wednesday morning, past contingents of United States armed forces, state and local police, and up to 500 war veterans, some of whom had personal memories of Mr McCain.

McCain's remains were flown by military aircraft to Washington on Thursday from Arizona, which he had represented in Congress since his first election in 1982. (Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call) McCain's casket lies in state in the Capitol Rotunda on Friday.

Fitzgerald and McCain struck up a friendship after meeting in 2006, which marked Fitzgerald's third season with the Cardinals, and the relationship between the two men blossomed over the past decade despite a 47-year age difference.

Members of the public were queueing outside the building waiting for a viewing later from 1.00 pm. McCain's pallbearers will include actor Warren Beatty and Russian dissident Vladimir Kara-Murza, as well as former Vice President Joe Biden and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Joe Lieberman and Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

Later, he told them in the eulogy, "You are a living legacy and proof of John McCain's success".

The invitation-only service will take place at Washington National Cathedral, and only those with tickets will be permitted to attend.

After the ceremony, the public will pass through the Rotunda for six hours to pay their respects to McCain by filing past his coffin, which was brought into the Rotunda and placed atop a pine board catafalque originally constructed in 1865 for President Abraham Lincoln's casket. That the men who vanquished McCain in their presidential battles were asked to speak is testament to the former war prisoner's commitment to looking beyond party and signalling that Americans, regardless of political affiliation, are rowing together in the same boat.

Mr McCain specifically instructed that Mr Trump not be invited to his funeral. "On behalf of a grateful nation, we will ever remember that John McCain served his country, and John McCain served his country honorably". Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein were among those in attendance, along with members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
