Tropical Storm Florence forms; no threat to US

Tropical Storm Florence forms; no threat to US

A tropical storm warning is in effect for the islands, where the National Hurricane Center warns of four to eight inches of rain, life-threatening flash floods and tropical-storm-force winds for the southern islands.

On the forecast track, the depression will be passing just west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands Friday night and Saturday morning.

Unlike the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic has been very quiet for the past month as cooler than average water temperatures and multiple rounds of Saharan Dust have kept chances of tropical development down.

"The system is moving toward the west near 12 miles per hour, and this general motion with a gradual turn toward the west-northwest is expected to continue during the next few days", the National Hurricane Center said.

Storm system development in the eastern tropical Atlantic continues to be a strong possibility over this weekend, with additional development by late next week.

As of 11:00 AM, we now have a potential tropical cyclone in the Atlantic Basin. With the 90 percent likelihood that it will develop further, the system would become Tropical Storm Florence. There are a couple of things that will need to be monitored, however, over the next few days.

They claim that the storm is likely to form over the next 14 days with a central pressure as strong 943mb.

The system is then expected to move away from the islands and intensify into a hurricane by the middle of next week. First, whether or not this system continues to encounter less wind shear as it approaches the Gulf of Mexico.

This is expected to move northwest over Cuba and into the Gulf of Mexico early next week.

Hurricane season ends November 30, but September 10 is historically the "peak" day for storm activity in the Atlantic.
