Josh Donaldson's 5 greatest moments with the Toronto Blue Jays

Josh Donaldson's 5 greatest moments with the Toronto Blue Jays

I'll go ahead and hit the headline right up front: the Atlanta Braves are involved in the discussions with Toronto over an imminent trade of former All-Star and MVP third baseman Josh Donaldson. When the team was scuffling early in 2015, Donaldson told reporters after a loss that "this isn't the try league, this is the get it done league".

Donaldson enjoyed another solid season in 2016 and helped the Blue Jays to a second consecutive playoff appearance before injuries started taking a toll.

"If that happens, he's a great player man", Encarnacion said after being asked about the trade, according to MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm. The Blue Jays will cover $2.7 million of the almost $4 million still owed to Donaldson, sources told The Athletic.

Coincidentally, the Blue Jays and Indians face off during a four-game set at Rogers Centre beginning next Thursday, September 6th.

Whether he leaves the Jays' nest now or this offseason, Toronto missed a real opportunity to get some good prospects in a trade for Donaldson.

But an injury-dampened season and no real clarity on when he could return, quickly made Donaldson untradeable for Toronto until a well-timed return to action this week.

When he has played, Donaldson has hit five home runs and his.757 OPS is his lowest since his 2012 rookie season. Donaldson spent the first four years of his career in Oakland. Now that Donaldson is gone, it leaves only a handful of holdovers from those Blue Jays rosters.

Donaldson, widely regarded as one of the best players in the game at the hot corner when healthy, reportedly cleared waivers Friday, making him eligible to be traded to any team. Talks did not progress, however, and Donaldson instead entered his free agent year without a contract.

He was eighth in the 2014 MVP vote, took 23 of 30 first-place votes in his 2015 victory, and was fourth in the 2016 vote. He is now on a minor league rehab assignment.
