Chinese billionaire CEO Richard Liu arrested in USA, accused of sexual offence

"The local police quickly determined there was no substance to the claim against Mr. Liu, and he was subsequently able to resume his business activities as originally planned", it said.

JD.com, the company in which Liu has a large controlling stake, told the Reuters news agency on Monday that he was back in China and back at work.

The Minneapolis Police Department over the weekend said the investigation remained active but would not confirm details of the arrest or the allegations against 45-year-old Liu.

JD.com declined to elaborate on the event but sent The Post to Liu's lawyer, who did not respond to requests for comment.

JD.com said Mr Liu, also known as Richard Liu, was falsely accused.

The Nasdaq-listed JD.com has made headway in its battle with e-commerce giant Alibaba by operating its own logistics network and providing Chinese customers with same-day or next-day delivery for many of their purchases.

In July, a court in Australia denied Liu's efforts to block the release of his name in association with a sexual assault trial in which he was not accused of any wrongdoing, according to a court document.

"I'm not aware of any other company that has similar rules", said Chris Leahy, co-founder of advisory firm Blackpeak and a corporate governance expert.

While the doctoral program primarily takes place in Beijing in partnership with the prestigious Tsinghua University, the students were in the Twin Cities last week as part of their training. The Chinese Consulate in Chicago is "closely following the relevant situation" and trying to verify facts regarding the situation, ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters at a daily briefing. Bloomberg estimates his net worth to be about $7.3 billion.

JD.com founder Richard Liu attends a business forum in Hong Kong, China June 9, 2017.

As JD.com aims to spread beyond Asia, Liu has lately sought to raise his profile among global business leaders. An Australian court found one of Liu's penthouse guests guilty of rape in an incident from 2015.
