Kolkata bridge collapse: Eastern Railway asks RITES to investigate

Kolkata: A portion of the arterial Majerhat bridge in Alipore area of South Kolkata collapsed today following which some casualties are feared, police said.

"They have been admitted at a private hospital while nine others were admitted at the SSKM Hospital with severe injuries", a senior police officer said.

Since the part of the bridge came crashing down on road, several people are trapped in their their vehicles which are buried under the debris.

The death toll in the shocking incident is likely to go up as several cars and other vehicles are still trapped under the bridge. In March 2016, an under-construction flyover in north Kolkata collapsed killing at least 27 people.

"We are constantly monitoring the situation", she said. Its proximity to Garden Reach and Khidirpur makes Majerhat Bridge one of the busiest in the city.

While police confirmed the death of one person, fire brigade personnel engaged in the rescue work said 25 injured were pulled out from the rubble.

The incident disrupted public transport routes and overall traffic movement through the otherwise bustling Diamond Harbour Road in Taratala was suspended. "But we need to remove the debris to find out what is underneath", another official working at the accident site said.

It is possible that not many are trapped under the collapsed part of the bridge.
