4 missing, 10 hurt after 2 boats collide, sink on Colorado River

The bodies of a man and woman killed in a weekend collision of two recreational boats on the Colorado River were found Tuesday and the search continued for one other missing person, authorities said.

Mohave County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Anita Mortensen says 51-year-old Christi Lewis was found Monday in a section of the river that borders California and Arizona.

Authorities are continuing to conduct an extensive search for 1-2 people who are missing following a boating accident on the Colorado River Saturday evening.

Furthermore, Sheriff Doug Schuster said that none of the boaters were wearing life vests, which are not required by law.

Citing an emergency dispatcher whose report was broadcast on local TV stations, the Los Angeles Times reported the boats were traveling at around 50 miles per hour when they collided. Each boat had a mix of family and friends who were from out of the area. Another seven were taken to hospitals by ambulance and treated for less serious injuries, officials said.

Some of the passengers were carried miles down the river before they were found, while others were pulled from the water by passing boaters, the sheriff's office said.

The force of the crash caused one of the boats to sink and the other sustained heavy damage.

One diver was injured in the recovery efforts, the sheriff's office said Tuesday.

Lewis and the three people still missing, had been riding in the Hallet, officials said. The accident happened nearly 300 miles east of Los Angeles along part of the river that runs along the border of California and Arizona.

"We have four parties unaccounted for and presumed submerged", he said. "Once they are located, then we can continue pursuing that information".

Two helicopters searched by air, and divers were sent out into the river's waters, which can range from shallow to 30 feet deep. The Mohave County Sheriff's Office said it will continue to patrol the Colorado River until all passengers are accounted for.
