The man who presented to the regional station is in police custody and assisting with their inquiries.

Police said it remained unclear how long the bodies of the five had remained in the house before discovery, but have since confirmed first responders would have access to a police chaplain in order to deal with what they found.

He did not confirm the exact number of dead, nor did he detail what the relationship was between the man in custody and the deceased.

There are no ongoing concerns for public safety.

"It's just so sad, they've got primary school aged kids and I thought it just couldn't be", she said.

Forensic police and the homicide squad are undertaking a "meticulous" investigation of the Bedford crime scene which "could take a number of days". "It is safe, we have grown up all our lives and this is just so sad and horrific".

"She was such a handsome person and such a go getter and hard worker", she said.

Assistant Commissioner Steel said the investigation was still at a "very early stage", but described the incident as a tragic event.

While violent crime with multiple victims is rare in the country, this was the second major incident in Western Australia this year.

'They just seemed like a normal family, you would never imagine anything like this happening here, ' Mr D'Souza said.

The bodies of Peter Miles, 61, his 58-year-old wife Cynda, their daughter Katrina, 35, and her four autistic children with estranged partner Aaron Cockman - Taye, 13, Rylan, 12, Arye, 10, and Kadyn Cockman, 8 - were found at the Miles residence.

When officers went to the house, they found Michelle Petersen and her son, Rua, dead, and her daughter Bella in a critical condition.

In July, a 19-year-old man was charged with the murders of two children and their mother in another Perth suburb, Ellenbrook.
