Florence Isn’t Alone, More Tropical Storms Are Brewing

Hurricane Florence is blowing sustained winds of up to 130 miles per hour as it barrels toward the US East Coast as a Category 4 storm. The storm is expected to slow down and possibly stall near or over the coast on Friday.

An estimated 250,000 more people from the northern Outer Banks were due to be sent to higher ground starting Tuesday at midday.

Hurricane Isaac - which late Sunday became the fifth hurricane of the season - is heading west towards the Caribbean.

Over the next 36 hours, Florence's winds could reach 150 mph, the hurricane center says.

Hurricane Florence's size is "staggering", National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham warned.

Back in late August, the Atlantic tropics looked like they were going to stay boarded up for the season.

Monster storm Mangkhut surpassed Florence's strength on Tuesday, with peak winds of about 260 km/h, and the storm is forecast to strengthen further - closing in on sustained winds of 280 km/h - as it surges toward Hong Kong later this week. The storm surge, major flooding, and damaging winds extending well beyond the center of the storm could cause major damage to coastal communities.

A warm ocean is the fuel that powers hurricanes, and Florence will be moving over waters where temperatures are peaking near 85 degrees, Blake wrote.

Governor Greg Abbott says Texas is preparing for a possible tropical storm system headed toward the Gulf of Mexico.

President Donald Trump declared states of emergency for North and SC and Virginia, opening the way for federal aid.

Isaac could be upgraded to a hurricane tonight, but some weakening of the system is expected to take shape by mid-week.

Over in the Pacific, this storm is still moving toward Hawaii, where tropical storm warnings and watches have been issued, the hurricane center said.

Hurricane-force winds could buffet the Carolinas by Wednesday night with landfall likely in SC and North Carolina on Thursday, the NHC said.

Helene, meanwhile, was still in the Atlantic's spawning ground for hurricanes off the coast of Africa, swirling with 105 mph winds and forecast to become a major hurricane, about 375 miles west of the Cape Verde islands. "We're just a strip of land - we're a barrier island", she said. Olivia should weaken through Tuesday but remain a strong tropical storm when it reaches the Hawaiian Islands.

Here's what you need to know about Hurricane Florence before it hits the U.S. "There is no way to be completely safe", but going inland might not be much safer.

She says the company is bringing in up to 2,000 workers from Florida and the Midwest to augment its 4,600 workers in North Carolina and SC.
