‘Staggering’ Hurricane Florence On Collision Course For Carolinas

‘Staggering’ Hurricane Florence On Collision Course For Carolinas

The storm was upgraded Monday morning to a Category 3 hurricane, but grew to Category 4 a short time later, the National Hurricane Center said Monday.

"Re-strengthening is forecast to occur during the next day or so, and Florence is expected to be an extremely unsafe major hurricane through Thursday night", said the National Hurricane Center in its latest update.

Northam's decision comes after costal communities in North Carolina ordered mandatory evacuations and SC officials ordered an evacuation of their entire coast line.

Storm scientists are swooping through Hurricane Florence as it increases in size and heads toward landfall on the East Coast later this week.

Added to this Florence is likely to slow down as she moves inland through Friday and the weekend bringing a "prolonged and exceptionally heavy rainfall event", according to the key message from the NHC.

And the storm surge, which could be as much as 12 feet in some areas, will be on top of sea level rise from climate change.

Across the Carolinas, people are preparing for what experts believe could be a devastating storm.

It is expected to make landfall in the US, Thursday as an "extremely dangerous" hurricane according to the National Hurricane Center.

As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, Hurricane Florence had maximum sustained winds of about 140 miles per hour with higher gusts, a slight weakening from the morning, the NHC said.

It was located 845 miles (1,360 kms) east-southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina, and moving at 17 mph (29 kph) in a west-northwest direction.

"Florence is rapidly strengthening this morning", the National Hurricane Center advisory said. That was Hurricane Hazel, which was already responsible for killing 1,000 people in Haiti and had winds clocked at 150 miles per hour when it hit the coast in 1954.

President Donald Trump declared states of emergency for North and SC, facilitating federal help, and cancelled campaign events Thursday and Friday, citing the storm. On the current forecast track the center of Florence will move over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas through Wednesday.

"It is an extremely risky, life-threatening, historic hurricane".

Not only will hurricane force winds be a major concern along the coastal locations, but flooding rains will also be a high risk. Gov. Roy Cooper declared North Carolina under a state of emergency last Friday.

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during an Oval Office meeting on hurricane preparations for Hurricane Florence at the White House in Washington, U.S., September 11, 2018. "Any amounts of money, whatever it takes, we're going to do it".

A million people have been told to evacuate coastal parts of the eastern United States as Hurricane Florence churns towards the country.

Although it's hard to attribute any storm's intensification to one specific factor over another, a scientist explained some of the potential reasons to Fox News.
