California to phase out fossil fuels for electricity by 2045

The bill also requires 100 percent fossil-free sources used to generate electricity by 2045.

Brown also signed an executive order setting a target of 2045 to achieve carbon neutrality.

Energy Storage North America (ESNA), the most influential gathering of policy, technology and market leaders in energy storage, applauds Governor Jerry Brown and the California State Legislature for passing landmark Senate Bill (SB) 100, which sets the largest-scale zero-emission electricity targets ever established for a USA state. A bill Brown signed Monday sets a goal of phasing out fossil fuels from the state's electricity sector by 2045.

"It's impossible to overstate how significant it is for a state as large and influential as California to commit to 100 percent clean energy", the Sierra Club said in a statement.

California Gov. Jerry Brown wants the state to remove as much carbon dioxide from the air as it emits.

This action comes days before grassroots activists, mayors, governors, heads of industry and worldwide leaders convene in San Francisco for the express objective of mobilizing climate action at the Global Climate Action Summit.

Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration shows California is ranked sixth among states in crude oil production and 15th in natural gas, though production of both has declined since the mid-1980s.

But Brown cautioned that reducing emissions enough to meet the Paris goal of capping global warming below two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) remains a daunting task.

Approval of the bill comes in the wake of a report detailing the effects of climate change on California.

As the Trump administration rolls back federal efforts to combat climate change, California has actively pursued a leading role in the worldwide fight against global warming.

EZRA DAVID ROMERO, BYLINE: The law requires the state to gradually collect all its electricity from clean sources like hydropower, solar and wind. California is the second state to pledge to make their energy carbon-free, the first being Hawaii. "California and the rest of the world have miles to go before we achieve zero-carbon emissions".

"It will not be easy", Brown tweeted after signing Senate Bill 100 and a related executive order.

Opponents - including the state's investor-owned utilities run by PG&E Corp., Edison International and Sempra Energy - raised concerns that the requirement would increase electricity costs.

Brown is preparing to host a global climate summit in San Francisco on Wednesday. "Planning needs to start now to allow a smooth transition to a 100% clean electricity system, avoiding stranded investments and driving better outcomes for families and businesses across California. While some are talking about climate solutions and green jobs, California leaders like Senator Kevin de León are making solutions real".
