Watches Issued As Isaac Closes in on Lesser Antilles

Isaac is expected to be near hurricane strength when it moves through the Lesser Antilles, with some weakening forecast afterward on Friday and Saturday.

The storm is located about 1,350 miles south-southwest of the Azores, and it is moving north-northwest at 14 mph.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km) from the center. Here's how it breaks down: Expect a breezy and mostly dry day Friday, with increasing winds up to 20mph.

Isaac caused some flooding earlier in Dominica and is forecast to gradually weaken over the next few days.

A yellow - "be aware" - warning, which also covers parts of South Ayrshire, was issued by the Met Office today.

Tropical Storm Watches were also discontinued for St. Maarten, St. Martin, Saba and Eustatius.

It was moving to the west at 16 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 35 miles per hour.

The NHC said, "A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area within 24 to 36 hours".

Interests elsewhere in the Leeward Islands should monitor the progress of Isaac. With Florence expected to be farther north at landfall, we will have no impacts from this storm locally other than large waves.

National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham says damaging winds and rain could begin hitting the coast late Thursday, pushing a storm surge that could reach 13 feet in places.

Forecasters say catastrophic freshwater flooding is expected over parts of North Carolina and SC ahead. Its surge could cover all but a sliver of the Carolina coast under as much as 11 feet of ocean water, and days of downpours could unload more than three feet of rain, touching off severe flooding.

The National Hurricane Center said Florence will eventually break up over the southern Appalachians and make a right hook to the northeast, its rainy remnants moving into the mid-Atlantic states and New England by the middle of next week.

President Donald Trump declared states of emergency for North and SC and Virginia, opening the way for federal aid.

Forecasters are predicting it will feel "very warm and humid" when the storm arrives.
